What Are Emotes on 7TV?

An overview of how emotes work across the platform.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Emotes are the heart of the 7TV experience. Theyโ€™re expressive images, both static and animated, that you can use across supported platforms like Twitch, Kick, and YouTube โ€” often enhancing chat interactions and meme culture within streams and communities.

Types of Emotes on 7TV

7TV supports a wide variety of emotes:

  • Static Emotes: Simple PNG or WEBP/AVIF images (like traditional Twitch emotes)

  • Animated Emotes: Dynamic, looping images using formats like APNG or WEBM

  • Zero-Width Emotes: Overlay emotes that sit on top of other emotes for creative combos

Where Are Emotes Used?

Once added, emotes can be used:

  • In Twitch and Kick chat (via the 7TV browser extension)

  • In emote menus on supported platforms

  • In personal or channel emote sets

How Do Emotes Work on 7TV?

Emotes are organized into emote sets that can be either:

  • Personal โ€“ your own collection you can use across channels

  • Channel-based โ€“ managed by a streamer and visible to anyone in their chat who also have 7TV installed.

Users can upload their own emotes or add public emotes from the 7TV emote database. Each emote has a unique code (like OMEGALUL or widepeepoHappy) used to trigger it in chat.

Do I Need a Subscription to Use Emotes?

No! Anyone can:

  • Browse and use emotes

  • Upload, and manage a 1000 emotes

  • Join in on chats that use 7TV

However, subscribing gives you personal emote slots, unlocks Zero-Width support, and grants you bonus cosmetics, like paints and badges.
